DESCRIPTIONThis book was originally published under the title "Road to the North Pole. Second Series." In the first series of The Road to the North VI Pole, a sketch is given of the voyages of Captain Hall. Those expeditions took place long before most of those who read these volumes were born. The expedition described in this book took place only 'the other day,' and has all the nearness of a ' current event.' It is selected for its own intrinsic interest, and because it must always hold a high place in the heroic annals of Arctic enterprise. No expedition was ever better equipped ; none ever started with higher hopes and anticipations, and few have fallen so far short of accomplishing the ends hoped for. It was the work of our American brothers, the men who inherit our traditions, and in whose veins flows English blood. In brave endurance, in sustained effort, in calm facing of expected and unexpected dangers, they, perhaps, have been quailed ; they cannot be surpassed. Two benefits may be gained by the readers of chis sad story. De Long and his companions give us a noble example of how to bear up against the bitterest failure. Up to the last they met life's duties and disappointments with brave hearts. Further, the entries in De Long's journals show that he and those with him found it a source of strength to believe in God's loving care. Even when He withheld from them the success which they coveted, De Long felt that He was doing all things well, and that the Father who had given His only begotten Son to redeem them could sustain them by His Spirit in life's darkest hours, and could uphold them even when Death came in one of his most terrible forms. The story of the Jeannette is of exceeding interest. She left San Francisco for her voyage to the Far North as recently as the year 1879. Captain De Long commanded this Arctic expedition, and his narrative is so vivid that we shall hope to give much of the story in his own words, his journals being full of adventure and remarkable experiences. |
