For through them a wonderful family of long-forgotten people springs again into life, their loves and hates, their hopes and fears, jealousies, disappointments and reconciliations, are ours to read and enter into, truly a human document of no ordinary kind. As we read on, there comes the inevitable pause . . . no more letters in the handwriting we have learnt to know so well; the writer's name spoken of in the past tense; he or she has gone the way of all flesh, to join the great Majority. The ancient and honourable family of Stratford, since the time of the Saxon Heptarchy, was seated in Warwick, Northampton, Gloucestershire, Essex, Suffolk, Herts, Bucks and Middlesex. In the reigns of Henry II and Edward II Stratfords occupied Merevale in Warwickshire, and were Sheriffs and Members of Parliament for that county. John Stratford was Archbishop of Canterbury in the reign of Edward III, Lord Chancellor, Keeper of the Great Seal, and also Lord Regent of England during his sovereign's absence in France. He left behind him a code of laws of his own framing, and Hollingshead mentions him as a restraining influence against the King's levying exorbitant taxation on the people to pay for his wars. Robert Stratford, who migrated to Ireland, was a member of the House of Merevale, and is written of as " much esteemed and of uncommon ability." His son, Edward Stratford, underwent much persecution for his attachment to King William, Prince of Orange, his houses were razed to the ground, woods burned and hundreds of sheep and oxen plundered.
